In the heart of Germany, nestled between the Rhine and the Black Forest, lies the charming village of Oberrimsingen. Oberrimsingen is more than just a picturesque stop on your journey. It’s a place where time whispers stories of ancient settlements, noble families, and the echoes of historical events. Let’s step back in time to the year 819. This is when Oberrimsingen first appears in recorded history, mentioned in a document donating lands to the Lorsch monastery. Imagine the village then, a collection of farmsteads dotting the landscape. Oberrimsingen, along with its neighboring Niederrimsingen, traces its roots back to the earliest settlements on the Tuniberg. Long before written records, evidence suggests that as early as 10,000 BC, reindeer hunters sought shelter in the caves beneath the Ehrentrudiskapelle.

Oberrimsingen’s story is intertwined with the noble families who shaped its destiny. The Edelfreien von Rimsingen, lords of the village in the 10th century, left their mark on the region’s history. One of their descendants, Hesso II von Üsenberg, played a significant role in bringing Cluniac monks to Oberrimsingen in 1072. These monks later established a monastery in nearby Grüningen. Over the centuries, Oberrimsingen passed through the hands of various rulers. From the Habsburgs to the monastery of Günterstal, and finally to the Lords of Falkenstein, each era added a new layer to the village’s rich tapestry.

The shadow of conflict has also touched Oberrimsingen. During the Peasants’ War of 1524-25, the villagers joined the Kaiserstuhl contingent, even participating in the siege of Freiburg. The Thirty Years’ War brought devastation, leaving Oberrimsingen in ruins and its population decimated. The proximity to the strategic city of Breisach meant Oberrimsingen often bore the brunt of military campaigns. The villagers endured quartering of troops, requisitions, and forced labor.

Despite these hardships, Oberrimsingen persevered. The 19th century brought progress. The villagers witnessed the arrival of steamships on the Rhine and found work in the Rhine correction projects. Electricity arrived in 1911, followed by running water in 1912. The 20th century brought further change. The establishment of the Christophorus Jugendwerk, a youth welfare institution, and post-war reconstruction contributed to a significant population increase. Today, Oberrimsingen thrives as a district of Breisach am Rhein. The Schloss Rimsingen, a beautiful neoclassical palace, hosts cultural events. The St. Stephan church, with its blend of Romanesque and Baroque elements, stands as a testament to the village’s enduring spirit. Oberrimsingen invites you to explore its layers of history, from ancient settlements to modern times. Its story is a testament to the resilience of a community rooted in a landscape of beauty and historical significance.
