“A church for a trade? That’s an interesting story,” you might think. You are standing in front of the St.-Martin-Kapelle and you are right. The construction of the St.-Martin-Kapelle is probably directly related to a remarkable event in the village’s history. In 1507, the Prince-Bishop of Constance and the imperial city of Überlingen had settled a long-standing dispute over possessions. These possessions were in an exposed location that was important to both sides. The bishop sold the bailiwick of Hohenbodman to the city of Überlingen, which had been pawned to Überlingen in 1478. In return, the city of Überlingen ceded Daisendorf to the diocese. The Curia of Constance may also have seen the need to build a chapel. This is why the St.-Martin-Kapelle was built. The consecration document of June 20, 1508 names Balthasar Brennwald, auxiliary bishop of Constance. The patron saint, St. Martin, was taken over from the mother church of Seefelden.
