Ever wondered what it felt like to dance with royalty? Right here in Flensburg at the Borgerforeningen you can almost feel the echoes of those grand balls.

The Borgerforeningen is more than just a restaurant. It’s a living piece of Flensburg’s history. Founded on May 12 1835 it quickly became the heart of the city’s Danish-loyal community. Think of it as a social club with a fascinating past.

Imagine the elegant gatherings. King Christian VIII himself visited twice. King Frederik VII and Countess Danner graced the halls with their presence. They even danced in the grand ballroom. The Borgerforeningen hosted festive balls concerts and theatrical performances. It was the place to be. It even had its own library. Members borrowed books to their hearts’ content.

In 1862 the Borgerforeningen played a pivotal role. They unveiled the Idsted Lion a powerful symbol of Schleswig’s history. The lion’s journey is remarkable. It went to Berlin then to Copenhagen’s Tøjhusmuseum. Finally in 2011 it returned to its original spot in Flensburg’s Old Cemetery. The Borgerforeningen’s involvement highlights its importance to the city.

Even after the Danish defeat in 1864 the Borgerforeningen remained a gathering place for Flensburg’s Danish-oriented citizens. It continued to thrive. Notable figures like MP Gustav Johannsen and Mayor J C Møller were members.

During World War II the Borgerforeningen’s restaurant played a unique role. Its lessee Hanni Matthiesen actively participated in the resistance movement. She smuggled weapons and explosives across the border. She risked her life for her beliefs.

Today the Borgerforeningen stands strong. Its membership is over 200. The building is beautifully restored. The restaurant is known for its excellent cuisine. The Borgerforeningen continues its tradition of bringing people together. It’s a place where history and hospitality meet. It’s a vital part of Flensburg’s vibrant cultural scene. Come inside. Feel the weight of history. Share a meal. And maybe even imagine yourself dancing with royalty.
