Gazing upon Guangji Bridge, do you sense the echoes of centuries past? This ancient bridge, also known as Qinghe Bridge, stands as a testament to time and history. It whispers tales of emperors and travelers, floods and restorations. Let’s journey back to the Ming Dynasty. Imagine the year 1416. Emperor Yongle, the third Ming emperor, commissions the construction of Guangji Bridge. This bridge, originally spanning the Qing River, became a vital artery for imperial processions and trade to and from northern regions. Years passed, and the river relentlessly gnawed at the bridge’s foundations. In 1456, during the reign of Emperor Jingtai, Guangji Bridge underwent a complete restoration, solidifying its structure against the river’s persistent force. The bridge’s importance meant regular upkeep, ensuring its continued use over the decades. Fast forward to 1982. The relentless flow of the Qing River threatened to consume Guangji Bridge once more. A decision was made. The bridge was meticulously relocated to its present location, gracefully arching over the Xiaoyue River. Guangji Bridge, in its current form, showcases Ming Dynasty ingenuity. It is a three-span stone arch bridge, a marvel of engineering. The bridge stretches 48.04 meters long and 12.46 meters wide, its stone blocks meticulously fitted together. The interior, a blend of strip stones and city bricks, is fortified with white ash mortar. Iron bars bind the stones, creating a cohesive and resilient structure. Stone balustrades and望柱 (wangzhu), ornamental columns, flank the bridge, offering both safety and aesthetic appeal. Two pointed bridge abutments cut through the water below, further bolstering the bridge’s strength. In 1984, Guangji Bridge received official recognition for its enduring historical value. The Beijing Municipal Government declared it a protected cultural relic, safeguarding it for generations to come. Guangji Bridge stands not just as a passage over water but as a bridge through time, connecting us to the rich tapestry of Beijing’s past.
