How about we explore Genech? It is a commune in the Nord department in northern France. Genech is a place with a unique story.

Let’s start with the basics. Genech covers 7.46 square kilometers. In 2022, it had a population of 2811. That is a density of 380 people per square kilometer. The mayor of Genech is Anne Wauquier and her term runs from 2023 to 2026.

The name Genech has interesting roots. It may come from the Greek word “guné” meaning woman. Under Roman rule, “gynécée” referred to workshops where women made military clothing.

Genech has a history stretching back centuries. In the Middle Ages, Genech depended on the barony of Cysoing. Louis, the Count Évrard, gave it as a dowry. Évrard was the Duke of Frioul and founder of the Abbey Saint-Calixte of Cysoing. From the 17th century, the Saint-Aldegonde family held the title of lords of Genech.

Maximilien de Sainte-Aldegonde restored the Genech castle around 1600. It had been partly destroyed by fire. He died there in 1635. Later, Albert-André de Sainte-Aldegonde was the Baron of Maingoval and Lord of Genech around 1670.

Before the French Revolution, Genech was an agricultural village. It supplied products to the Lille area. In 1549, records show 118 households. The village had land for plowing, meadows, woods, and a mill.

In 1872, the Genech train station was built. In 1894, the agricultural school was founded and quickly became a real institute. By the late 19th century, Genech had industry. This included two weaving mills, a tannery, a brewery, and two mills.

The arms of Genech are quite striking. It features ermine with a red cross and five gold cinquefoils. The climate in Genech is classified as degraded oceanic. The average yearly temperature is about 10.5 degrees Celsius. Rainfall averages around 696 mm per year.

Since 2004, the Genech castle has housed the administration and CDI of the Charlotte-Perriand high school. Classrooms are in a modern building in the gardens.

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation church has a history dating back to 1164. It was rebuilt in the mid-16th century under Mathéas de Barbé, the abbot of Cysoing. The bell tower shows a troubadour gothic style. Inside, there are paintings from the 17th century.

So, Genech is a place with layers of history. Its name, its lords, its agriculture, and its modern institutions all add to its story. Next time you are this way, remember its past.
