Atop Landeskrone a volcanic sentinel stands. Its basalt heart beats with a history older than most. Millions of years ago molten rock surged forth creating this very hill. Landeskrone the local mountain of Gorlitz towers 419 meters above sea level. From this height you can see Gorlitz spread below. The Jizera and Giant Mountains are visible on clear days.

Landeskrone has witnessed centuries of change. Bronze Age settlements existed here. Evidence suggests people lived here over 3000 years ago. Later Slavic peoples built fortifications. A semi-circular defence protected the southern slope. Another fortification stood between the hill’s two peaks. These structures guarded a strategic location. Landeskrone was mentioned in print as early as 1268. It was then called “castrum landischkrone”.

A medieval castle once crowned Landeskrone. This impressive structure was demolished in the 15th century. The oldest remaining building is an observation tower dating back to 1796. It offers stunning panoramic views. For centuries this spot was strategically vital. In 1620 Johann Georg I of Saxony used it as an observation point. In 1758 Austrian General Esterhazy stationed troops here. The Prussian army occupied Landeskrone in 1866 during the war against Austria.

The Landeskrone’s significance shifted in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Romantic ideals influenced its development. The observation tower was built. Then in 1901 a Bismarck Tower was erected. This structure was the first of its kind in Silesia. It was a testament to the growing popularity of the mountain as a destination for locals and tourists.

Today Landeskrone boasts a hotel and a restaurant. A Gipfelkasten a summit box with a book sits near a Theodor Korner monument. Landeskrone offers more than just views. It’s a place where history geology and nature intertwine. It’s a place to explore. It’s a place to discover. It is Landeskrone.
