Founded in 1958, this museum stands as a testament to Ukrainian immigration in the Detroit area. It also reflects Ukrainian culture and its contributions to the United States.
The Ukrainian American Archives & Museum of Detroit started with a vision. Roman and Ivanka Dacko migrated to the United States after World War II. They began collecting books, documents, and photographs. These items related to the Ukrainian experience in this country. The Dackos housed their collection in a building that once served as a bank on Woodward Avenue. This interesting bank building was moved to its current location.
Later, Irene and Ostap Zacharkiw merged their Ukrainian museum in Warren with the Dackos’ collection. This merger formed the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum we see today. It became a central place for preserving Ukrainian heritage.

In 2012, the American Community Survey noted significant Ukrainian presence in Detroit. About 5,700 Ukrainian-born persons lived in the metropolitan area. Another 13,400 reported Ukrainian as their first ancestry. An additional 5,300 identified it as their second ancestry. The Ukrainian American Archives & Museum plays a vital role.
