“A beacon of hope”. That’s what Kościół Świętego Bonifacego became for many during the dark days of World War II.

Kościół Świętego Bonifacego stands before us. It is more than just a church. It embodies faith, resilience and community spirit.

Let’s step back in time to the late 1920s. The idea for a Catholic church on the eastern bank of the Lusatian Neisse River took root. A suitable plot was acquired and engineer B. Sander was chosen to design it. His design was simple and functional. It was intended to serve both the military and the local civilians.

In March 1929, a significant event took place. Prelate F. Bruckner from the Holy Cross Parish in Görlitz consecrated the ground. He then broke the ground for the church’s foundation. The cornerstone was laid on May 26 1929. Just a year later on May 11 1930, Kościół Świętego Bonifacego was consecrated. Cardinal Adolf Bertram of Wrocław dedicated it to Saint Boniface. He is the main patron saint of Germany. Initially, the church was part of the Holy Cross Parish in Görlitz. It also served as a garrison church.

A pivotal change occurred in December 1940. The church came under the sole administration of the Archdiocese of Wrocław. During World War II, Priest F. Scholz ministered to forced laborers and prisoners of war. Kościół Świętego Bonifacego became a sanctuary for many. Polish prisoners found solace here. They prayed for hope and their eventual return home.

The church’s interior was renovated between 1962 and 1968. Figures of Saint Adalbert and Saint Stanislaus were installed. These are the patron saints of Poland. The interior was painted and new bells were funded.

The current design dates from 2000 to 2002. The presbytery was adapted to the renewed council liturgy. Kościół Świętego Bonifacego became a deanery church in 1973. From 1990 to 1999, it again served as a garrison church.

Interestingly, the church houses an organ. This organ originally came from the synagogue in Görlitz. After the pogrom in 1938, the organ was moved. It was sold to Kościół Świętego Bonifacego.

Today, Kościół Świętego Bonifacego holds a central place in the city. It hosts religious and patriotic celebrations. It provides a place for reflection and spiritual growth. It strengthens the hope that comes from meeting Christ. The Kościół Świętego Bonifacego remains a symbol of faith. It is a testament to the enduring human spirit.
