Established in 1885, it was the first Methodist church. It was also one of the earliest Protestant churches in Korea. This makes it a significant landmark in the history of Christianity in Korea.
The story begins with Henry Appenzeller. He was an American Methodist missionary. Appenzeller arrived in Korea with a mission. That mission was to spread the teachings of Methodism.
In September 1887, Appenzeller took a significant step. He purchased a small hanok. Hanoks are traditional Korean houses. He purposed to use it as a place of worship. He named it “Bethel Chapel”. This humble beginning marked the true start of the church.
As the congregation grew, the need for a larger space became apparent. Church leaders decided to construct a new building. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 9, 1895.
Important Korean leaders attended it. Soh Kwang-pom and Yun Chi-ho were among them. This showed the growing influence and acceptance of the church.
The new building’s dedication service was held on December 26, 1897. They also named this building “Bethel Chapel”. It was a momentous occasion for the church and its followers.
The architecture of Chungdong First Methodist Church is noteworthy. It has a simplified American Gothic style. Arched window frames characterize it.
In 1926, the church underwent an expansion. It changed from a cruciform to a rectangular building. This expansion was carefully done. Brick walls were added without damaging the original structure.
Chungdong First Methodist Church played a vital role in early Korean publications. It served as the headquarters for several newspapers. These included the Tongnip sinmun. It was the first private newspaper in Korea.
The Korean Christian Advocate was also based here. It was the first Christian newspaper in Korea. The church acquired Korea’s first privately-owned printing press.
Today, Chungdong First Methodist Church continues to thrive. It holds worship services in both Korean and English. This caters to a diverse congregation.
The church also maintains the Mangon Christian History Reference Room. This room houses historical materials. It offers insights into the church’s rich past. In 2023, the church opened a history museum.
