A gilded lance, no longer aimed at a fearsome dragon. The Georgsbrunnen at Obermarkt has seen its fair share of transformations. The Georgsbrunnen, a true gem among Görlitz’s fountains, has graced the Obermarkt since the year 2000. Its story, however, begins much earlier, in 1590. Originally, the Georgsbrunnen featured multiple waterspouts and the figure of either St. George or the town crier, perched atop its column. The current “George” you see isn’t the original. It’s a replica, missing its original insignias. The original statue now resides safely within the Kulturhistorisches Museum at Neiße Straße 30. Take note of the curious lion at the figure’s feet, sticking out its tongue. This detail is absent from earlier depictions of the Georgsbrunnen. It’s a mystery how it appeared. The Georgsbrunnen hasn’t always stood here at Obermarkt. It was moved several times throughout its history. In the 18th century, the original stone pillar was replaced with the elegant Baroque-style column you see today. Around the same time, the coats of arms of former mayors, once displayed on the pillar, vanished. The current replica statue holds a gilded Saxon coat of arms, not the original “George” slaying the dragon. After being dismantled in 1856, the original figure and waterspouts found a new home at the Klosterplatz, adorning a different fountain. Only in 2000 did the Georgsbrunnen return to Obermarkt, its presence adding to the square’s historic charm.
