Construction of this late Gothic masterpiece at St Nicholas’ began in 1452. The elegant southern portal, adorned with sandstone figures of St. Nicholas and St. Catherine, was added later, in 1515. Over the centuries, St Nicholas’ Church bore witness to the ebb and flow of life in Görlitz. It served as a burial church for generations, their stories etched into its very foundations. The church endured its share of hardship, damaged by fires multiple times, yet always rising from the ashes. In 1925, the church underwent a profound transformation. It was converted into a memorial for soldiers killed in action during World War I. The artist Martin Elsässer led this redesign, imbuing the space with the emotional intensity of Expressionism. St Nicholas’ Church stands today as a testament to both faith and resilience, a poignant reminder of the past and a symbol of hope for the future.
