Three hundred and twenty-three souls. That’s the number etched into the stone before us at the KZ Gedenkstätte Biesnitzer Grund. Imagine the weight of that number. Each one a life cut short a story silenced. This memorial in Görlitz isn’t just a monument. It’s a whisper of tragedy a scream against oblivion.

The KZ Gedenkstätte Biesnitzer Grund stands as a chilling reminder of a subcamp of Gross-Rosen concentration camp. It operated from August 1944 until the war’s end. It was known as the Biesnitzer Grund though it never held independent status. Primarily Jewish prisoners from Hungary and Slovakia suffered here. Many were from the former Soviet Union. They toiled in the Görlitz Waggon- und Maschinenbau AG a war production plant.

These weren’t nameless faces. They were individuals with families hopes dreams. They were forced to work for the Wumag enduring brutal conditions. They endured starvation abuse. Their daily existence was twelve hours of backbreaking labor six days a week. They were victims of the Nazi regime’s insatiable hunger for war production.

The horrors didn’t end with the forced labor. On February 8 1945 the camp was evacuated. A death march commenced. Sick and weak prisoners were simply shot. The march led through several villages ending in Rennersdorf another makeshift subcamp. About 25 prisoners unable to walk were murdered before the march even started. Forty remained in Görlitz. A grim testament to the cruelty of their captors.

This mass grave in the Jewish cemetery holds the remains of those who perished. Their suffering is commemorated by the memorial. The granite stone crowns a Star of David. Inscribed in Hebrew and German it reads: “Here rest 323 murdered comrades who fell victim to Hitler’s tyranny in the concentration camp ‘Biesnitzer Grund/Görlitz’ in the years 1943-1945. We will never forget them by fighting for peace. The citizens of the city of Görlitz.”

The memorial isn’t just a place to mourn. It is a call to action a commitment to remember. We stand here not just to recall the past. We stand here to ensure that this horror is never repeated. We are the keepers of their memory. Their stories must be told. Their names must never be forgotten. The KZ Gedenkstätte Biesnitzer Grund stands as a solemn reminder that indifference is a dangerous thing.
