Standing tall and proud, the Reichenbach Tower dominates the skyline of Goerlitz. It is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, a testament to the city’s rich history and a cherished landmark that continues to captivate tourists.

The Reichenbach Tower is one of Goerlitz’s three fortified towers and is the tallest. It was probably built in the 13th century and first mentioned in 1376. In 1485, circular battlements were added on top of the tower, and a wooden hood was placed above it. The tower was connected to the Kaisertrutz, a fortified tower built in 1490, by two walls in 1521.

The tower has played a crucial role in the city’s defense. In the early days, watchmen were stationed atop the tower, keeping a sharp eye on the surrounding areas, ready to warn of any approaching threat. The watchmen lived in the turret room and were responsible for striking the tower clock. Today, the clock is electronically operated.

In 1904, the last tower guard left his post. Over time, the ravages of time took their toll, causing significant damage to the tower. Extensive restoration work was carried out in 1935, during which eight steel anchors were inserted into the lower part of the tower. The ends of these anchors were concealed behind twelve colored coats of arms, designed by the artist Arno Henschel.

After World War II, the tower was no longer used for military purposes and was transformed into a viewing tower. Today, you can climb to the top and enjoy panoramic views of the city, its beautiful buildings, and the picturesque landscape.

The Reichenbach Tower continues to hold a special place in the hearts of the people of Goerlitz. It is a symbol of their resilience, their heritage, and their unwavering spirit.
