Breathing history, Mount Zion Pentecostal Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. In 1921, Reverend Richard Frier Sr. felt God’s anointing. He and fellow African Methodists formed Emmanuel Mission. This mission later became Emmanuel Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Reverend Frier Sr. and the members embraced struggles with God’s grace. The church first settled at 203 East 103rd Street in New York City. Great Reverends like A.C. Clark and H.P. Heath served there.

As membership grew, God blessed them. In 1941, a new chapter began. The church bought a building at 1765 Madison Avenue. Reverend L.M. Capers led the congregation to their new home. They renamed it Mount Zion A.M.E. Church.

The change wasn’t just in name or location. It was in the spirit. Mount Zion A.M.E. Church showed an ability to overcome adversity. Their tenacity and God’s Spirit created strong bonds. They reinforced the scripture to keep the Unity of the Spirit.

Mount Zion A.M.E. Church experienced God’s diversity. They witnessed His work for those following His purpose. Among the pastors was Reverend Alvin J. Simmons. In 1950, the mortgage was fully paid. Reverend William Lee Freeman became pastor in 1953. He grew the membership to 772. The Young People’s Choir was formed. In 1962, Reverend Wendell Foster took the lead. Reverend John G. Ragin was appointed pastor in 1965. In 1973, Reverend Lawrence S. Odom led. Later pastors include Rev. Dr. O’Neil Mackey, Sr., Reverend Carl F. Hunter, Reverend Theodore R. Kelsey, Reverend Robert A. Brown, Sr., Reverend Jo-An L. Owings, and Reverend Kahlil G. James.
