Was it fate or a stroke of luck that spared this magnificent building behind me from complete destruction? This is the Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz. Its story is one of resilience, rebirth, and the enduring spirit of a community.

Completed in 1911, the Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz quickly became a symbol of the thriving Jewish community here. The community had grown substantially after Jews were once again given the same rights as other citizens in 1812. Designed by William Lossow and Max Hans Kühne, it stood out with its Art Nouveau style. These architects also designed the main train station in Leipzig.

For just 27 years, the Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz served its original purpose before the dark days of the November Pogrom in 1938. Miraculously, the Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz survived Kristallnacht. The fire department intervened and extinguished the fire before it caused major structural damage. It was one of the few synagogues in Germany to avoid total destruction. However, the Star of David was removed from the dome. Jewish citizens fled or were killed.

After World War II, the Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz was transferred to the Jewish community in Dresden. But the small community in Dresden couldn’t afford the maintenance. In 1963, the city administration of Goerlitz took ownership. For decades, the Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz stood empty. It fell into disrepair and was even used as a storage space for theater sets.

After German reunification, efforts began to save the Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz. A lengthy restoration process began in 1991. It cost around €10 million. Finally, in July 2021, the Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz reopened as a cultural center.

In September 2022, a new Magen David was placed on top of the Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz. This returned the star to its rightful place.

Today, the Kulturforum Gӧrlitzer Synagoge hosts cultural events and interfaith activities. It also provides a space for religious services. The Cultural Centre Synagogue of Goerlitz stands as a testament to the past and a beacon of hope for the future. It stands as a reminder of Goerlitz’s vibrant Jewish history.
