“Windy Hill needs work.” Those words might sound unassuming. But they sparked a major upgrade to the Windmill Hill Signal Station.

Welcome to the Windmill Hill Signal Station. It stands high above Europa Point. For over a century this station has kept watch over the Strait of Gibraltar. It is a strategic location. The station monitors ships entering and leaving the Mediterranean. It also watches vessels crossing between Africa and Europe.

Imagine the responsibility. Personnel here track roughly 60,000 ships annually. They also detect suspicious activity in British Gibraltar territorial waters. The station logs unlawful incursions by Spanish state vessels.

The Windmill Hill Signal Station plays a crucial role. It feeds information to the UK and its allies. It supports the international fight against drug trafficking. The waters here are a known route for shipping narcotics into Europe. Information from Windmill Hill has led to the seizure of illegal shipments.

The Ministry of Defence invested £2 million to upgrade the Windmill Hill monitoring facility. The complex will be expanded. Extra monitoring equipment will be installed. Around 30 personnel work at the station. Its location on Windmill Hill provides near-panoramic views of the strait and the Bay of Gibraltar.

Commodore Mike Walliker highlighted the importance of this upgrade. He noted that the support provided to the many ships navigating this critical maritime choke-point will improve and be second to none. He also issued a warning to those intending to use the waters for criminal activity.

There has been a monitoring center here since the late 19th century. This upgrade brings it completely up-to-date. The nickname “Windy Hill” is well-earned. The station faces a near-constant onrush of air.

Windmill Hill itself has a rich history. It was fortified in the 1770s. This was part of Chief Engineer Colonel William Green’s improvement schemes. It happened prior to the Great Siege of Gibraltar. John Drinkwater served in Gibraltar during the siege. He noted that the lines of Windmill Hill have great command. They are situated within musket-shot of the sea.

Artillery batteries were constructed here in the 19th century. They supported lower-level defenses on Europa Flats. They could also enfilade potential attackers landing in the area. The flat terrain of Windmill Hill was ideal for mobile gun sites. Guns could be moved as needed.

Windmill Hill Signal Station continues its important work. It stands as a testament to Gibraltar’s strategic significance. It also highlights its commitment to maritime security. The station’s upgrade ensures it will remain a vital asset for years to come.
