Established in 1898 by a group of six Harvard undergraduates, the Fox Club stands as a testament to history and tradition. The Fox Club isn’t just any building; it’s one of Harvard’s original all-male final clubs. Located on 44 John F. Kennedy Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Fox Club exudes an air of exclusivity. Its very name, and the symbol of a fox carrying the letter “F”, comes from a fascinating piece of trivia. The name evolved from the Digamma Club, its original moniker. The letter “F” bears a resemblance to the archaic Greek character “digamma,” which represents the number six, the same number of founding members. Designed by Guy Lowell, the architect behind Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the Fox Club’s clubhouse was built in 1906. It’s not just a private club; it’s a recognized city historic landmark. Over the years, the Fox Club has wrestled with the question of admitting women. In 2015, they provisionally admitted nine women, a decision later revoked by graduate members. Even as recently as 2019, a vote on changing the all-male membership policy failed. The Fox Club’s roster boasts some impressive names, including Steve Ballmer, former CEO of Microsoft, and even Bill Gates himself. It’s a place where history and influence intertwine, a silent witness to countless stories whispered within its walls. The Fox Club remains a significant landmark in Harvard Square, a symbol of tradition and exclusivity in the heart of Cambridge.
