The cemetery surrounding Oku-no-in is vast. It’s considered the largest in Japan. Over two hundred thousand graves and monuments fill this hallowed ground. Many notable monks and feudal lords chose this site for their final resting place. The desire to be near Kobo Daishi hoping for spiritual guidance in the afterlife drove this choice.

The oldest trees the majestic cedars that shade these graves date back to 1012 AD. Most of the forest however was replanted in the Meiji era after much of the original vegetation was cleared. The paths themselves are ancient. A two-kilometer cobblestone walkway leads you deeper into the sacred space.
