Pentecostal Bridgegroom Temple. A beacon of faith and resilience. It has witnessed the changing tides of Philadelphia since its humble beginnings in 1933. Picture nine devoted souls, gathered in Sister Garnett’s home, their prayers echoing the hopes of a new spiritual community. Pentecostal Bridgegroom Temple’s journey began there. Soon, the storefront at 1504 South 20th Street became their sanctuary, a place of daily prayer and divine seeking. Their first pastor, Elder Stephen W. Bishop, guided the growing congregation. He oversaw the baptism of Sister Willie Mae Caruthers, the first in Jesus’ name, and the spiritual awakening of Sister Dora Hilton (Mayfield), who later married the church’s third pastor. The congregation thrived under Bishop’s leadership, leading to a move to 1439 South 20th Street. The spring of 1940 brought another relocation, this time to 834 Lombard Street. Elder Nichols, a figure of wisdom and love, took the helm. During his 26-year pastorate, he rose through the ranks, from District Elder to Bishop in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. His legacy of holiness and devotion resonated within the church until his passing in 1965. A new chapter unfolded in August 1985. Elder Ronald L. Young arrived from Tulsa, Oklahoma, becoming the fourth pastor of Pentecostal Bridgegroom Temple. Under Bishop Young’s guidance, the church underwent a significant transformation. They moved from Lombard Street to the expansive complex at 6901 Woodland Avenue, a testament to their growth and commitment to community service. This new location housed not only the church, but also a school, a homeless shelter, and a senior boarding home. In September 2013, the torch of leadership passed to Elder Kevin M. Young, son of Bishop Ronald Young. He continues to shepherd the Pentecostal Bridgegroom Temple. The church’s doctrinal statement, a testament to their unwavering faith, emphasizes belief in the Bible’s divine inspiration, the Holy Trinity, Jesus’s virgin birth, death, and resurrection, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Pentecostal Bridgegroom Temple’s history speaks of faith, perseverance, and community service. It stands as a testament to the power of prayer and the enduring spirit of its congregation.
