South University’s story is one of transformation and growth. The South family acquired the college in 1974. They renamed it Draughon’s Junior College. It continued to evolve. In 1986 it became South College. A major milestone arrived in 2001. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted accreditation at the master’s level. This led to a name change. South College became South University.
This name change however created an interesting legal challenge. Sewanee The University of the South had already registered their name. A legal dispute followed. It lasted until 2003. In 2020 South University received substantial federal funding through the CARES Act. This helped to stabilize the institution. The university however continues to adapt. It navigated a class-action lawsuit regarding robocalls in 2021. It was also part of a large student loan cancellation in 2022 due to alleged fraud.
