The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lapa is connected to a brotherhood. The Venerable Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da Lapa founded it in 1755. This brotherhood had grand ambitions. They built a cemetery a school and even a hospital. All in the name of faith and community.
But the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lapa holds a unique secret. It houses the heart of King Pedro IV. He bequeathed it to the brotherhood in his will. His heart rests in the high altar since 1835. It’s a poignant reminder of the deep connection between the monarchy and the people of Porto.
The church’s architectural style is a fascinating blend. It shows both Rococo and Neoclassical influences. This reflects the long construction period. Different architects worked on the project. Joao Glama Stroberle started. Jose Figueiredo Seixas continued the work. He oversaw it until his death in 1773.
In 1995 the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lapa acquired a magnificent pipe organ. This impressive instrument weighs 32 tons. It stands 15 meters tall. It’s one of the finest in the Iberian Peninsula. It adds to the church’s splendor. It plays a significant role in the church’s renowned concerts.
