Ever wondered what Hamburg was like millions of years ago? The Geologisch-Paläontologisches Museum offers a fascinating journey through time.

Welcome to the Geologisch-Paläontologisches Museum. This museum is a treasure trove of geological and paleontological wonders. It is part of the Museum der Natur Hamburg. You’ll discover the Earth’s evolution and the development of life.

The Geologisch-Paläontologisches Museum originated from the natural history collections. These collections once belonged to the Naturhistorischen Museum Hamburg. In 1977, it found its current home in the Geomatikum’s basement. The Geomatikum is in Hamburg’s Rotherbaum district. Here, you’ll also find the Mineralogy and Zoology museums. All three belong to the Museum der Natur Hamburg.

In 2014, these museums were consolidated. They formed the Centrum für Naturkunde of Hamburg University. On June 1, 2021, it merged with the Museum Koenig from Bonn. This created the Leibniz-Institut zur Analyse des Biodiversitätswandels. The Geologisch-Paläontologisches Museum was renamed. The goal is to unite the three research areas. They aim to create a unified natural history museum in Hamburg.

Inside the Geologisch-Paläontologisches Museum, you’ll see how living things evolved. This evolution spans 3.5 billion years. Fossils from famous sites are on display. You can see fossils from Solnhofen or Messel. The museum explains geology’s influence on life’s development. It also details the impact of advancing and retreating glaciers during the Ice Ages.

Imagine holding a fossil from Solnhofen. Feel the texture of ancient stone. Picture the creature that once lived. Visualize the ice sheets reshaping the land. The Geologisch-Paläontologisches Museum makes the distant past vivid.

The Geologisch-Paläontologisches Museum is more than just a collection. It is a place of learning. It offers diverse programs for all ages. These include events, guided tours, and lectures.

Before you leave the Geologisch-Paläontologisches Museum, consider this. Every fossil tells a story. Each rock reveals a secret about our planet. The Geologisch-Paläontologisches Museum invites you to listen. It encourages you to explore the Earth’s long and fascinating history.
