Did you know Shawfield Stadium hosted the Scottish Greyhound Derby? Right here in Rutherglen it stood for years a testament to sporting history. Shawfield Stadium wasn’t just a stadium. It was a hub a place where Clyde FC played from 1898 to 1986. It hosted greyhound racing starting in 1932. The Scottish Greyhound Derby was a highlight. It ran from 1970 to 1985 and again from 1989 to 2019. Speedway also found a home at Shawfield. The Glasgow Tigers raced there from 1988 to 1995 and again from 1997 to 1998. The Scottish Monarchs even made an appearance in 1996. Boxing matches were held too. Benny Lynch the first Scottish boxing world champion defended his title here in 1937.
Shawfield Stadium however wasn’t always smooth sailing. A tragic accident occurred in 1957 during a football match between Clyde and Celtic. A wall collapsed injuring many children. One sadly died. The stadium faced many financial difficulties. It closed in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic and the death of owner Billy King sealed its fate. The future? Redevelopment. Plans are underway to demolish the stadium. New homes shops and a hotel are planned. It’s the end of an era for Shawfield Stadium. Its story is one of triumphs tragedies and ultimately change. But the memories remain. The roar of the crowds the thrill of the races the echoes of sporting legends they all live on in the heart of Rutherglen.
