Imagine a cozy village nestled between Freiburg and the Kaiserstuhl. That’s Buchheim, a part of March im Breisgau. March itself is made up of Buchheim, Holzhausen, Hugstetten, and Neuershausen. Let’s explore Buchheim.

Buchheim sits on the Marchhügel. It is about 8 km northwest of Freiburg’s city center. From the Marchhügel, you can see the Kaiserstuhl. The Eichelspitzturm stands proudly to the right.

Did you know that March is young? It was formed in 1973. Buchheim, Holzhausen, Hugstetten, and Neuershausen joined together. But, the area has a long history. The name “March” and its villages existed in the Middle Ages. “March” means a bordered area.

Buchheim, Holzhausen, Hugstetten, and Neuershausen were called the “March villages”. Buchheim is known for its wine. The vineyards “Rebstuhl/Buchheim” and “Steingrube/Neuershausen” are part of the Kaiserstuhl wine region.

Let me tell you about a special concert in Buchheim. Friedbert Schill hosted it in Alemannisch. Wolfgang Miessmer and the Buchheim musicians played. Christian Sade, a Frenchman, directed and composed. Miessmer played the accordion. He sang “Schnäckehiisli”. The audience loved it. Sade’s orchestral version followed. It started classically and ended with reggae. They also played “In s Mueters Stibili” and “Dr Hans im Schnogeloch”. The musicians played at a high level. Schill quoted: “Tradition means passing on the fire, not worshipping the ashes”.

Look up at the Buchheim church tower. Notice the stork on the cross. It’s above the blocked waterspout. Buchheim offers a blend of tradition and innovation. Its location makes it a great place to visit. It is between the city, the Black Forest, and the Kaiserstuhl. Buchheim is more than just a village. It is a place where community and culture come alive.
