Nestled in the heart of Lombardy, the Comune di Grezzago whispers tales of a rich past. The Comune di Grezzago isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the ebb and flow of history, a silent observer of generations. Comune di Grezzago, a name that echoes through time, connecting us to the very essence of this Italian town, approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Milan. The roots of Grezzago intertwine with the resurgence of agriculture in the Po Valley during the High Middle Ages. Ingenious canalization projects breathed life back into the land after the tumultuous period of barbarian invasions. Small settlements sprouted within these fertile grounds, cradled by the burgeoning influence of Christianity and marked by the construction of rural chapels. In Grezzago, the Chapel of San Martino emerged, a spiritual beacon that historical documents from the 13th century reveal belonged to the Pieve di Pontirolo. This reveals Grezzago’s unique position. Its civic life and trade flowed through Trezzo sull’Adda, while its spiritual heart beat in time with Pontirolo. The 15th century brought a new dimension to Grezzago. The rustic dwellings and the humble chapel were graced by the presence of a “lord,” residing in what is now known as Palazzo Zoja. This grand rural villa, with its distinctive arcaded courtyard, stood apart, a symbol of authority and influence. Its design mirrored the Visconti and Sforza castle villas, complete with fortifications like corner towers, entrance towers, and small pivellini. Fast forward to 1722, and the cadastral maps of Maria Theresa of Austria paint a vivid picture of Grezzago as a quintessential rural center. The lord’s villa, the farmhouse, the rustic dwellings, and the chapel clustered together, forming the heart of the village amidst cultivated fields. By 1850, the village core had grown, with additions to the existing farmhouse and rustic buildings, while the chapel became integrated into other structures. Grezzago retained its monocentric structure, anchored by the church square and the villas leading to the countryside, now Via Roma and Via Cavour. The land in 1850 was devoted to cereal crops, with mulberry cultivation still prevalent. The impending crisis in silkworm production, which would later shake the silk industry, had not yet cast its shadow. Remarkably, until 1969, Grezzago’s industrial presence consisted solely of a silk-twisting mill, underscoring its deep-rooted rural character. Comune di Grezzago stands as a symbol of resilience and adaptation, a place where history continues to unfold.
