Let’s talk about tissue samples. When sending tissue samples, they must be in a neutral buffered 4% formalin. Use leak-proof containers. Cooling isn’t necessary. The ratio of tissue to formalin should be about 1:5. The fixation times should not exceed 24 to 36 hours. Suboptimal conditions can limit a probe’s diagnostic assessment.
For bone marrow biopsies, a special fixation is needed. You can request special shipping containers for this. Blood and bone marrow smears should be air-dried and unfixed. Tissue samples for immunohistological or molecular-pathological tests can be sent as paraffin blocks. For mutation analysis, use tumor-bearing tissue samples.
Cytological preparations should be fresh. They need to be in leak-proof containers with a maximum of 20 ml of punctate fluid. Due to blood contamination, add an anticoagulant like heparin or EDTA. For cytological smears like gynecological or thyroid smears, send completely dried slides. Use only pencil for labeling.
All preparations must be clearly marked on the sample container. Also include a request for pathological assessment. The examination duration depends on the probe type. It also depends on the tests needed. Billing is done according to GoÄ or EBM.
For second opinions, paraffin blocks are preferred. If not possible, send representative external stainings. Unstained sections are also helpful. For reference pathology in studies, follow the study’s material requirements. The Pathologie may get a second opinion, choosing the consulting pathologist.
