The Kensington Methodist Church stood as a constant amidst the change. Back then, Kensington was a place where you knew your butcher, your grocer, even the conductor on your tram route. Life moved at a slower pace, a stark contrast to the Johannesburg of today. Imagine a young girl, in her crisp new Jeppe Girls’ High uniform, nervously boarding the tram outside Kensington Methodist Church, her panama hat perched on her head. She was new to the area, having moved from a small town. The city felt huge and intimidating. Today, Kensington still holds much of its original charm. The Jeppe schools, the Kensington Clinic (once the Kensington Sanatorium run by nuns), and the neat suburban houses. The Kensington Methodist Church, steadfast through the decades, stands as a testament to this enduring spirit. While the trams are gone, replaced by the constant hum of cars, the echoes of Kensington’s past linger. The church has seen the transformation, the shift from a close-knit community to a more modern, fast-paced world. Yet, the heart of Kensington remains.
