Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here at the Evangelische Kirche Rellinghausen you stand on layers of faith and community. This isn’t just a building it’s a testament to resilience.

The Evangelische Kirche Rellinghausen you see before you is the third church built on this very spot. Imagine the first humble structure a 15-meter-long wooden chapel. Built between 1654 and 1663 it served a community whose roots stretched back to the 16th century. This first church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a symbol of independence for the Protestant community. The Catholic majority had refused them shared use of the Stiftspfarrkirche. They needed their own space. Their own sanctuary.

After about a century this small wooden church became too small and dilapidated. So a second church was built. It stood west of the original. Sadly. only photographs and records from its 150th-anniversary celebration in 1925 remain. This “dear little church” was eventually replaced by the structure we see today. But its memory lives on. Parts of it are preserved in the adjacent Gedächtniskapelle. A poignant reminder of the past.

The Evangelische Kirche Rellinghausen which was completed in 1935 stands as a powerful symbol of the enduring spirit of this community. Designed by architect Hans Hörner it is unique. It is the only church building from the 1930s in Essen that survived World War II. Its design blends elements of modern architecture with subtle nods to classical styles. Notice the pillars on the exterior. They resemble those of an ancient temple.

Even the bell tower is intriguing. It’s styled like the stern of a medieval cog. This symbolizes the church’s role as a vessel carrying the congregation through life’s journey. Inside the ship motif continues. The curved supports evoke the ribs of a ship’s hull. This stunning detail reminds us of the community’s strength and unity.

The Evangelische Kirche Rellinghausen is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith community and survival. A place where layers of history intertwine to create a unique and meaningful experience. It whispers stories of perseverance and devotion echoing through the ages. Take a moment to appreciate its significance. Absorb the atmosphere. Feel the legacy. Let the Evangelische Kirche Rellinghausen’s story inspire you today.
