What if the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School for International Careers could talk? It might tell tales of transformation. This school stands at 120 West 46th Street in Manhattan. It is in the heart of the Times Square neighborhood.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School has a unique history. It began in the 1970s in Lower Manhattan. The school started as an all-girls annex to Murry Bergtraum High School. Its initial aim was to offer business education to young women. This opportunity was not readily available back then. Today, the school is co-ed, embracing all genders.

In 1995, the school received a new name. It was renamed to honor former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. This happened a year after her death.

The building itself has an interesting past. It was once home to the Performing Arts High School. The 1980 film Fame was based on this school. In the winter of 1988, disaster struck. A fire engulfed the vacant building during renovations. The facade and exterior walls survived. The interior needed complete reconstruction. Performing Arts High School then moved to LaGuardia High School. The building reopened in 1995 as the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School offers several programs. These include international business studies. Virtual enterprise also plays a role. Hospitality and tourism programs are available. Students can study accounting. The school also has drama and dance programs.

The building’s history goes back even further. It was originally constructed in 1893. Additions followed in 1905. The building has five stories. It spans about 52718 square feet.

The auditorium has seen upgrades over the years. A comprehensive renovation in 2008 improved it further. It now boasts a state-of-the-art dimming system. This system has central and satellite control. The renovation included motorized hoists. They raise and lower theatrical lights. Stage curtains were added. A studio-quality sound system was installed. A large-format projector and screen completed the upgrades.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School continues to evolve. It adapts to the changing needs of its students. It stands as a testament to education and opportunity in New York City.
