Gazing upon the Ehrenmal War memorial in Dortmund-Huckarde, one can almost hear the echoes of history. The Ehrenmal isn’t tucked away in some grand square. It resides in the quiet embrace of St. Urbanus Church’s grounds. A simple, half-height stone wall cradles the memorial, creating a space for reflection. Two flowerbeds flank a central area, partially paved with stone slabs. At the heart of it all rises a two-meter stone pedestal, bearing the weight of memory. The Ehrenmal’s centerpiece is a bronze sculpture, larger than life, depicting two soldiers. One stands tall, his helmet firm, clutching a flag that seems to ripple in a phantom breeze. His other arm supports his fallen comrade, helmet lost, hand reaching towards his heart. Their eyes meet, a silent testament to their shared sacrifice. This poignant scene speaks to the “hero worship” sentiment that followed World War I. This is further reinforced by the inscription on the pedestal’s front: “Unseren tapferen Helden 1914-1918” (Our brave heroes 1914-1918). The Ehrenmal, however, doesn’t solely focus on the First World War. Two additional stone tablets on the wall broaden the memorial’s scope. The left tablet bears the inscription “Den Toten zum Gedenken 1939” (In memory of the dead 1939). The right, “Den Lebenden zur Mahnung 1945” (A reminder to the living 1945). The Ehrenmal in Dortmund-Huckarde stands as a solemn tribute. It serves as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of both World Wars.
