From the gentle slopes of Fond’Roy Park in Uccle, the Geleytsbeek begins its journey. The Geleytsbeek meanders through Brussels, a ribbon of water weaving through the urban landscape. It eventually merges with the Zwartebeek, a tributary of the Senne River. The Geleytsbeek has a rich history, its name echoing back to 1110 as “glatbeke,” meaning “clear stream.” This makes it one of the oldest place names in the region. Over time, the name evolved to “Geletbeke” and finally “Geleytsbeek.” Interestingly, it was also once known as “Molenbeek,” meaning “mill stream,” due to the numerous mills it powered along its course. The Geleytsbeek flows beneath the Chaussee de Saint-Job via a clear water pipe, a key part of a project to disconnect it from the sewage system. This initiative aims to revitalize the stream’s biodiversity and mitigate flood risks. The disconnection, completed in 2024, marks a significant step in restoring the Geleytsbeek to its natural state. This helps prevent sewer overflows during heavy rainfall, which had contributed to flooding issues, particularly in the summer of 2021. Along the Geleytsbeek, you’ll find remnants of its historical significance. Although many have disappeared over time, the last remaining mill, the Neckersgat Mill, stands as a testament to the stream’s industrious past. The Château de Stalle, also known as “Château du Papenkasteel,” built in 1688, still stands proudly along the Geleytsbeek. The Geleytsbeek is more than just a waterway. It’s a living testament to Uccle’s history, reflecting the interplay of nature and urban development.
