Deep within the landscape lies the Canal de l’Espierres. It whispers tales of industry and revival. Let’s uncover its story.

The Canal de l’Espierres was built between 1840 and 1843. Its purpose was to link the Deûle River to the Escaut. The goal was to supply water and coal to Lille Roubaix Tourcoing. For over a century the canal fueled the region’s economic growth. Fishing became popular near Estaimpuis and Leers Nord. The waters there were cleaner.

During World War I in 1914 the Germans seized the canal. They transported gravel and construction materials. These materials aided military efforts. Many tugboats navigated the canal during the war. The traffic was intense. Thirty to forty boats passed daily. Workers toiled seventeen hours a day. German soldiers damaged or removed about a thousand trees along the canal’s banks.

After 1950 industrial growth in Roubaix and Tourcoing harmed the Canal de l’Espierres. Industries used its tributaries for waste disposal. The water became polluted. French authorities did little to stop it. By 1972 waste disposal into the canal was banned. The waste was diverted into the Espierres stream. This increased its normal flow tenfold.

Between 1985 and 2011 no boats sailed on the canal. For 26 years it was essentially an open sewer. However in the 21st century tourism sparked renewed interest. The Canal de l’Espierres became part of the Deûle Escaut link. It reopened to leisure navigation in 2011. The Blue Links project funded the restoration. The European Union contributed to this project.

The archives of the Canal de l’Espierres Society are available in Tournai. They span from 1841 to 1955. These records include board meeting minutes and shareholder information. These documents offer insight into the company’s activities.

The Canal de l’Espierres extends for 8.4 kilometers. It is 16 meters wide. Its maximum depth reaches 1.8 meters. Originally it transported coal from Hainaut to France. The decline of the coal industry led to the canal’s closure. The last boat passed through in 1983.

Between 2008 and 2011 the canal underwent restoration. It once again welcomes tourist boats. This project united Flanders Wallonia and France. The Canal de l’Espierres was dredged to a depth of 1.90 meters. Ghent Dredging removed 31500 cubic meters of mud. Wallonia and France shared the cost. The project totaled around 3 million euros.

So as we stand here remember the Canal de l’Espierres’ past. It was a vital artery. It faced pollution and neglect. Now it thrives. It is a testament to restoration and regional cooperation.
