Imagine Dublin in the 19th century. Order was kept by the Dublin Metropolitan Police or DMP. Today we explore the story of DMP Superintendents Division A.

The Dublin Metropolitan Police was established in 1836. It replaced the old County Constabulary. This new force aimed to bring modern policing to Dublin. DMP Superintendents Division A was a key part of this structure.

The DMP was modeled after London’s Metropolitan Police. Uniforms were similar and so was the organizational structure. Instead of a Chief Constable, a Commissioner commanded the force. This commissioner was a magistrate. This setup was meant to ease public concerns about a strong police force controlled by the government.

Records from the DMP offer glimpses into the lives of its officers. These records include details like name, age, and trade. Height, previous service, and divisions attached to are also listed. You might even find the reason for leaving the force. From 1858 religion was also recorded.

The Dublin Police Act of 1836 established the DMP. It authorized a police office in Dublin. This office was overseen by two salaried justices. The Chief Secretary for Ireland directed the police force. The act also covered recruitment and police conduct. It granted powers of arrest and managed the force’s finances.

The DMP faced challenges during the Land War in the 1880s. Many policemen were injured. Strikes were even threatened in 1882.

During the 1913 Lock-out, the DMP was involved in clashes with union members. Though cleared of wrongdoing, their reputation suffered.

Unlike the Royal Irish Constabulary, the DMP was unarmed. Some DMP officers aided the IRA during the War of Independence. Edward Broy famously passed information to Michael Collins.

In 1922, the DMP became “Póilíní Átha Cliath”. In 1925, it merged with the Garda Síochána. “Dublin Metropolitan” remains a Garda command region today.

The ranks within the DMP evolved over time. By the early 20th century, they included Commissioner and Divisional Commissioner. Assistant Divisional Commissioner, Chief Superintendent and Superintendent were also ranks. Inspector, Station Sergeant, Sergeant, Constable, and Supernumerary Constable completed the structure.

DMP Superintendents Division A played a crucial role in Dublin’s policing history. It bridged the old system and the modern Garda Síochána. The division helped shape law enforcement in Dublin.
