Have you ever heard of a dog so beloved, he became a symbol of a city’s resilience? Right here in Ashland, Massachusetts, stands the Dog Statue, a bronze tribute to Spencer, the golden retriever who captured the hearts of Boston Marathon runners and fans worldwide. Spencer wasn’t just any dog. He was a beacon of hope, a furry embodiment of the “Boston Strong” spirit. The Dog Statue is located near Spencer’s favorite spot on the marathon route, a place where he’d cheer on runners year after year, rain or shine. His owner, Rich Powers, began bringing Spencer to the marathon after the 2013 bombings, but it was in 2018 that Spencer became a viral sensation. Pictures of him holding “Boston Strong” flags in his mouth, amidst the downpour, touched hearts across the globe. Runners would stop mid-race, just to snap a photo with this four-legged icon. Spencer’s story, however, wasn’t without its challenges. In 2020, he was diagnosed with a tumor. Despite his health battles, Spencer continued to spread joy, returning to his marathon post in 2021 and inspiring many with his resilience. Sadly, Spencer passed away in February 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love and unwavering support. The Dog Statue, funded by Spencer’s fans, stands as a testament to his impact. Initially, the Ashland Select Board denied the request to place the statue on town property. However, local residents Robin and Cynthia Eynon Hicks generously donated a piece of their land across from Spencer’s cheering spot, ensuring that his memory would live on. So, as you stand before the Dog Statue, remember Spencer, the golden retriever who embodied the spirit of Boston Strong, and whose unwavering support continues to inspire runners and dog lovers alike.
