Drawn by faith, families on the east side of the Los Angeles River faced a challenge. In the winter of 1884 to 1885 disastrous floods washed out bridges. These bridges led to downtown Los Angeles. These families could not attend Mass. The two to three mile journey to Placita Church or Saint Vibiana’s Cathedral was difficult for pioneer families and rancheros. This led to the establishment of Sacred Heart Church.
Sacred Heart Church emerged as the first suburban church in Los Angeles. It began in temporary buildings in August 1887. The cornerstone of the present church was laid on February 10 1889.
Sacred Heart Church is a historical Roman Catholic parish. It was founded in 1887 in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood. It is the fourth oldest parish in the city. For over one hundred and fifteen years Sacred Heart Church has served a wide immigrant community. This included Irish Italians French and Germans. Currently Sacred Heart serves a largely Hispanic community.
An old photograph from circa 1890 reveals the church’s interior. The view looks up the aisle. Rows of pews lead toward the altar. The ceiling appears highly ornate. Stained glass windows line the walls. Some windows are open.
Sacred Heart’s distinguishing characteristic has been a vibrant faith. This faith is expressed in warm and loving hospitality. It extends to all people across generations. These people have visited and called Sacred Heart Church their home parish. As a historical church Sacred Heart is a spiritual treasure. It is also part of the community’s history. The community seeks to preserve it for generations.
Sacred Heart School has provided quality education. It offers a true sense of family and community. Alumni support the school. They enroll their children and grandchildren. Some even return to teach.
