“Bees,” the sign warns. We are at Fukusenji in Tono. This Shingon-sect Buddhist temple was founded in 1912. It offers more than serenity.

Fukusenji’s grounds sprawl across hills. Getting around can be tiring but rewarding.

The main hall houses Japan’s largest wooden Kannon Bosatsu statue. It is an impressive 17 meters high. This statue was completed in 1963. It was carved from a single tree. Remember photography is not allowed inside the main hall.

Next to the hall stands a Tahoto pagoda. It was built in 1982. It enshrines the Godai Myo-o. These are the Five Great Wisdom Kings. The Shittenou or Four Heavenly Kings are also enshrined here.

Did you feel that? The air vibrates with the chants of monks.

A five-story pagoda stands further down. Famous temple carpenter Kikuchi Kyoji erected it in 1990. The atmosphere here might feel a bit eerie for some.

The Chinese-styled gates mark the end of the temple grounds. But your journey is not over.

Fukusenji is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season. That is at the end of April. The fall foliage in October is also stunning.

If you plan to visit Tono Furusato Village, don’t miss Fukusenji. They are close to each other.

To reach Fukusenji from Tono Station, take the bus towards Sakanoshita. It is a 22-minute ride. Get off at Fukusenji. Note that there are only five buses per day.

Alternatively you can cycle around Tono. The hilly landscape can make it tiring. A rental car is a good option. You can rent one from Kitakami Station or Shin-Hanamaki Station. Both are about a 50-minute drive to Tono.

Fukusenji offers a unique blend of spirituality. It also offers natural beauty and artistic grandeur. It is a place where folklore and faith intertwine. As you leave Fukusenji contemplate the giant Kannon. Think about the wisdom kings. Remember the bees.
