Open University Malaysia’s journey began in August 1999. The Minister of Education invited Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operations Sdn Bhd METEOR to establish an open university. METEOR was a consortium of 11 public universities. This initiative led to the founding of Open University Malaysia in August 2000. The launch occurred on August 26 2002. The then Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, officiated the event.

The main campus is in Kuala Lumpur. Open University Malaysia has approximately 37 learning centres throughout the country. Ten of these are regional learning centres. Open University Malaysia currently has over 100000 students. These students are enrolled in more than 50 academic programmes.

In 2011, the MQA rating system gave Open University Malaysia a Tier 5 Excellent rating. This recognised its high standards.

Open University Malaysia offers various courses. These include diplomas and bachelor degrees. Examples include the South Australian Certificate of Education SACE and diplomas in Hotel Management. Students can also pursue diplomas in Food Beverage Management. Other options are diplomas in Electrical Electronic Engineering. Creative Multimedia Production and Computer Science diplomas are also available. Furthermore, students may study for diplomas in Business Studies. Business Information Technology and Accounting are further choices. Those seeking a bachelor’s degree can consider Psychology or Marketing Management.
