In 1807, a spirited pub threw open its doors, welcoming the bustling crowds of Bloom Street. This was the original Kings Arms. Now, let’s journey across the street to where the Kings Arms stands today. The current building dates back to the 1880s. It replaced the original pub across the street. The Kings Arms has been a constant presence, witnessing the changing times and the vibrant life of Salford. It even survived when other local establishments closed. The King’s Arms has always been more than just a pub. It’s a hub for the community, a stage for creativity, and a keeper of intriguing stories. Did you know it was once a meeting place for the North of England Irish Terrier Club? Today, the Salford Friendly Anglers Society, one of the world’s oldest angling clubs, still gathers here. You can even spot the faint inscription, “Ye Anglers Club House” on the building’s gable end. The upstairs theatre, with its dramatic arched ceiling, has hosted award-winning plays and experimental performances. From the two-story house built during a production to the drag queen pulling bananas from their pants, the Kings Arms has seen it all. The pub also nurtures grassroots talent through the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival. The King’s Arms is a testament to the spirit of community and artistic expression. Even its location reflects this. Situated close to Manchester city center, yet within Salford, it enjoys a unique position. This allows them to keep prices reasonable for their patrons. The pub has attracted a colorful clientele over the years. From dockers coming off shift to TV crews filming scenes for shows like “Cracker” and “Fresh Meat”, it has welcomed all walks of life. And let’s not forget the pub cat, Charlie (or Chaz). He’s just another piece of the Kings Arms charm. The Kings Arms stands as a beacon of community and creativity in Salford, a place where history comes alive and the future is brimming with artistic possibilities.
