Gaze upon this magnificent monument. This is the Julien Dillens Statue a tribute to a brilliant Belgian sculptor. It stands proudly in Brussels’ Square de Meeus.

The statue itself is a larger-than-life bronze reproduction. It’s three times the size of the original ivory figurine. Dillens crafted that smaller version for the city of Brussels. He presented it to architect Victor Jamaer. Jamaer had just finished restoring the Maison du Roi on the Grand Place.

The original statuette featured miniature versions of Brussels’ Town Hall and the Maison du Roi. Those details however are absent from this grander monument. This bronze version was created by another talented sculptor Jules Lagae a friend of Julien Dillens. Lagae also created the medallion adorning the statue’s marble pedestal.

The pedestal itself is a marvel of artistry. It’s crafted from white marble. The base features elegant volutes. The medallion depicts Julien Dillens. Beneath it an inscription reads Juliaan Dillens 1849-1904.

Above the medallion you see a coat of arms. It’s surrounded by laurel and acanthus leaves. More volutes crown the design. The sides of the pedestal are exquisitely carved. They depict the tools of a sculptor. You also see a laurel wreath and ribbons. A cherubic figure and more volutes complete the scene.

The monument was erected in 1909. A committee led by former Brussels mayor Charles Buls spearheaded the project. They secured funding from the Belgian government and the city. Architect Acker designed the pedestal’s structure. Gustave Dillens Julien’s brother contributed to the decorative elements.

The unveiling ceremony was a grand affair. Speeches were given by Charles Buls Professor Jean De Mot and Mayor Emile De Mot. They all celebrated the life and legacy of Julien Dillens. The statue stands as a testament to his remarkable artistic contributions. A fitting memorial indeed for a true master sculptor.
