Rice fields surround it. Imagine Marudo, a small town southeast of Milan. It is a municipality in the Province of Lodi in Lombardy. Let’s uncover some of its story.

Marudo’s history extends back centuries. After the 10th century, Marudo belonged to religious institutions. These included Santa Cristina and the monastery of San Pietro. In the 18th century, the Archinto and Cusani families gained control. During Napoleon’s reign, Marudo was part of Caselle Lurani. Later, it regained its independence.

In 1869, Castiraga and Vidardo joined Marudo. However, in 1902, they split to form Castiraga Vidardo. The name Marudo may come from the word “maturo” meaning mature.

The town has an official coat of arms. It features a silver cross on a blue background. Two golden rice stalks adorn the upper left corner.

One of Marudo’s main attractions is the parish church. It is dedicated to Saints Gervaso and Protaso. The church was built in 1790. It stands on the site of an old oratory. Fragments of frescoes can still be seen inside.

Marudo has seen its population change over time. As of 2008, about 11% of residents were foreigners. Romanians formed the largest group.

Agriculture is key to Marudo’s economy. The fertile land is perfect for rice growing. Many farms operate here. In 1860, a rice mill opened. It grew into Riso Scotti, now a multinational company. This company later moved to Pavia. Cattle breeding is also important. Many Marudo residents commute to Milan for work.

The Tomolpack Marudo volleyball team is very popular. It has been around for over 30 years. In 2016, the team won its Serie C group. It was promoted to the national B2 league. They even became regional champions.

Marudo is a lively town. It cherishes its traditions. It is a place where agriculture meets community. The church, the volleyball team and the rice fields all tell a story. Marudo is small but has a rich heritage.
