“A beacon on the hilltop,” some might say. Here at Grace Temple Church, that phrase isn’t just a metaphor. You see, this church, a cornerstone of the Lawnside community since 1915, literally stands on the highest elevation in the borough. Before the current structure graced this spot, a simple tent served as the gathering place for a small group of devout Baptists. They were committed to their faith, having branched out from Lawnside’s founding community of freed and escaped slaves. In 1917, their dedication led them to break ground on this very hill, replacing the tent with their first house of worship. Their efforts earned the church its affectionate nickname, “The Church on the Hill”. Over the decades, Grace Temple Church has seen its share of trials. A devastating fire in 1928 could have extinguished their spirit, but they rebuilt, stronger than ever. During World War II, the church opened its doors to the community, offering its basement as a casualty and first aid station. They even contributed to equipping rest rooms at Fort Dix, proving their commitment extended beyond their congregation. Today, Grace Temple Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. Each Sunday, the echoes of hymns serve as a poignant reminder of the journey from a humble tent to a beacon illuminating the history of Lawnside.
