“Bridge to heaven.” Does that sound intriguing? We’re standing at Akamatsu Viewpoint. From here, Amanohashidate is visible.
Amanohashidate is a sandbar. It stretches across Miyazu Bay’s mouth. This pine tree-covered sandbar connects both sides. You can walk or bike along this 3.6 km stretch. It’s a popular activity. Visit early to avoid crowds.
Amanohashidate is one of Japan’s three most scenic views. These views are called Nihon Sankei. People call it “bridge to heaven” because of its appearance. It looks like a pathway between earth and heaven.
To get the best view from Akamatsu Viewpoint, try something unusual. Bend over and look at the sandbar between your legs. The land and sky switch. Suddenly, it looks like there is a bridge in the sky.
To reach this spot, you can take the Kasamatsu cable car up to Kasamatsu Park. It is a short 5-minute ride. From there, you can see the celebrated sight. The main level offers a spectacular vantage point.
While here, you can visit Motoise Kono Shrine. It was once northern Kyoto’s most important shrine. The Sun Goddess Amaterasu-omikami was enshrined here. Later, she moved to Ise Shrine. Motoise means “Origin of Ise”. Notice the architectural similarities to Ise Shrine.
You can also visit Nariai-ji Temple. It has a carved statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. People visit to wish for a beautiful spirit and compassion. The temple has walking grounds and a pagoda. From the observatory, you get a 360-degree view.
To get to Nariai-ji Temple, catch the shuttle bus from Kasamatsu Park. If you have a car, drive from Motoise Kono Shrine. Parking costs 500 yen.
If you are coming from Kyoto Station, take the JR San-in Main Line to Fukuchiyama Station. Then, transfer to the Kyoto Tango Railway to Amanohashidate Station. It takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Consider visiting Maizuru Red Brick Park. It is an hour’s drive away. Here, you can tour old brick warehouses. They once stored naval munitions.
