Emerson Community Charter School opened its doors in 1937. Famed architect Richard Neutra designed its stunning building. The International Style of Architecture shines in its design. The two-story steel-framed structure features strong horizontal lines. First-floor classrooms boast 15-foot glass and steel sliding doors. These open to connect the indoors and outdoors seamlessly. Second-floor classrooms offer access to rooftop terraces. The school was considered a prime example of 1930s Modernism. It’s a masterpiece of design. It stands alongside Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater House and Walter Gropius’s House.
But Emerson Community Charter School’s significance extends beyond its architectural marvel. It’s a place where future generations learn. Marilyn Monroe and Bonnie Raitt once walked these very halls. They include Fairburn Elementary Saturn Elementary and Westwood Charter School among others.
