Did you know that Brembate boasts a history stretching back to the Neolithic era? Archaeological finds unearthed within its boundaries whisper tales of ancient settlements. We stand here today on the very land where these early inhabitants once lived. Brembate’s strategic location on the Brembo River made it a significant point throughout history. Imagine the Roman legions marching along these very paths. They utilized Brembate’s position near the Adda River for crucial trade routes. This area thrived under Roman rule. It became a key hub in the Isola Bergamasca region. Brembate continued its growth through the reign of the Longobards and Franks. The first documented mention of Brembate dates back to 962. A document references Brembati inferior lands owned by Berengario II and his wife. Legend claims Berengario began construction of a mighty castle. This castle was later bestowed by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to the Milanese Visconti family. Brembate didn’t escape the medieval conflicts between Guelphs and Ghibellines. The castle at Grignano. a nearby location, witnessed numerous battles. The battles between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice further impacted the town. Venice ultimately annexed Brembate in 1423. But peace was short-lived. In 1483 the Duke of Calabria in alliance with the Duke of Milan razed Brembate. Centuries of war famine and plague had already weakened the population. This act was a brutal punishment. The Venetian rule followed until the 18th century. Then came Austrian control until unification with Italy. Brembate contributed to the Expedition of the Thousand. Two locals participated. One died near Naples at the Battle of Volturno. Another Vittore Tasca became a prominent parliamentarian. Brembate transformed from a rural village to an industrial center. This change happened partly due to its proximity to Crespi d’Adda. In 1928 Brembate di Sotto and Grignano merged forming the Brembate we know today. Brembate’s coat of arms is symbolic. Three five-pointed stars represent those who fought for their land. The maize cob and wheat stalks show the agricultural past. Stylized arches represent the Romanesque bridge. This little town holds so much more than meets the eye. Explore its churches its Romanesque bridge. Discover the legacy of Vittore Tasca at his villa. Brembate’s story is one of resilience growth and survival. It is a testament to the human spirit that persevered through hardship to become the thriving community it is today. Let’s continue our journey.
