A peaceful presence graces us. This is Eifukuji Temple. It stands quietly in Tadaoka Town. Let me tell you about its history and significance.
Eifukuji Temple belongs to the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha sect. It is located in the town of Tadaoka. Masashige Kusunoki founded it in 1332. He was acting on the orders of Emperor Go-Daigo. Kusunoki raised an army in the Chiisakahayama area. Kanezane Imai lived in Tadaoka. He helped Kusunoki fortify Chiisaka Castle.
After Masashige died in battle, Kanezane became a monk. He entered the Tendai sect. Kanezane built this temple. He wanted to pray for Masashige’s soul. Later in 1498, Abbot Rennyo enshrined himself here. The temple then changed to the Jodo Shinshu sect.
The temple grounds are part of “Osaka Greenery 100 Selections”. Five large Biakushin trees stand here. Osaka Prefecture has designated them natural monuments. The tallest tree is said to have been brought from Mt. Ibuki. Kanezane Imai, a vassal of Yoshinaka Kiso, transplanted it in 1198. These trees have witnessed a long history.
Eifukuji Temple is accessible from Tadaoka Station. It is a five-minute walk. People of all ages visit. Most visitors are in their 30s and 40s. About half of the visitors come alone. The other half come in pairs. The temple is open from 9:00 to 17:00.
This temple offers a serene space. Visitors can quietly reflect. The small building has a lovely presence. Eifukuji Temple is a place of history. It is also a place of natural beauty. As you leave, remember the story of Kanezane and Masashige. Remember the ancient Biakushin trees. They continue to watch over this peaceful place.
