In 1908 meat-packing baron Michael Cudahy bought Rancho San Antonio. He transformed this land into Cudahy. This is Cudahy’s origin story. A tale of ambition and transformation.

Cudahy’s story began with 2777 acres. Cudahy subdivided the ranch into one-acre lots. He envisioned a community. A place where families could thrive. He sold these lots to farmers. They could grow vegetables fruit and raise livestock.

After World War II Cudahy became a blue-collar town. Steel and automobile plants hummed. White Americans found work and homes. This prosperity didn’t last. By the late 1970s the factories closed. Many residents left. Jobs vanished.

The population shifted. Apartment complexes replaced farmland. Cudahy’s population density soared. It became one of the densest cities in the US. This density continues today.

Cudahy wasn’t spared from hardship. In 2012 the mayor and city manager faced bribery charges. A medical marijuana dispensary was at the center of the scandal. This shook the community.

Tragedy struck again in 2020. A Delta Air Lines plane dumped jet fuel over Cudahy. Park Avenue Elementary School suffered the brunt of this event. This caused further outrage over Cudahy’s environmental past. The city’s history included an old dump site under the school. An Exide battery plant added to the pollution.

Cudahy’s story is one of remarkable change. From a meat baron’s vision to a densely populated city. A city that has endured hardship. Yet it perseveres. This is Cudahy.
