Imagine holding a rare stamp worth a fortune. This is the legacy of Jean-Baptiste Moens.

Jean-Baptiste Moens was not just a man. He was a pioneer. He was the father of philately. Right here in Brussels, we celebrate his contributions to the world of stamp collecting.

Born in Tournai in 1833, Jean-Baptiste Moens began his journey young. As a boy, he collected stamps from his family’s mail. Little did he know this childhood hobby would define his life.

By 1853, at just nineteen, Moens was already a businessman. He bought and sold books and stamps from the Bortier Gallery in Brussels. This covered walkway became his first marketplace.

In 1862, Jean-Baptiste Moens made history. He and Louis Hanciau published “Manuel des collectionneurs de timbres-poste”. This was Belgium’s first stamp catalog. It was also the second in French. Moens alerted collectors to forgeries. He published “De la falsification des timbres-poste”.

His passion didn’t stop there. In 1863, Moens launched “Le Timbre-Poste”. This was the first French-language philatelic monthly. It ran until 1900. He also published a series on fiscal stamps. This ran from 1874 to 1896.

Jean-Baptiste Moens’ expertise was highly sought after. He became the owner of eight “Post Office” Mauritius stamps. These were highly prized. In 1878, he published “Les Timbres de Maurice”. This book detailed the early stamps of Mauritius. It benefited from studies by leading philatelists.

Helen Morgan noted Moens’ importance. She said much of the early history of the “Post Office” stamps came from his pen. He handled most of these stamps. Madame Borchard discovered them in the late 1860s.

Moens’ business flourished. He amassed a vast collection of collectibles. His library included music, antiquities and stamps. In 1899, he decided to retire. He sold most of his stock.

The remaining stock was sold to M. Rubens. Rubens was a stamp dealer from Copenhagen. Moens’ philatelic publications went to H. Edgar Weston in London.

Jean-Baptiste Moens died in Ixelles in 1908. He was buried in the Ixelles Cemetery. The philatelic press mourned his death. They called him “The Father of Philately”.

Today, Jean-Baptiste Moens’ legacy lives on. He transformed stamp collecting into a respected field. His publications remain essential resources for philatelists worldwide. His work helped shape our understanding of postal history. His dedication to the hobby earned him lasting recognition.
