Established in 1599 by Peter Lowe, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow stands as a testament to centuries of medical advancement. Lowe, a surgeon trained in France, envisioned a regulatory body in Glasgow to ensure the quality of medical practitioners. He received a royal charter from King James VI for the Glasgow Faculty. Originally, this faculty aimed to regulate physicians, surgeons, and even dentists in western Scotland. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow wasn’t always known by its current name. It began as the Glasgow Faculty and later became the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1909. The present name, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, was adopted in 1962 to align with other medical and surgical royal colleges in the UK. The college has a rich history of medical education. It once offered a primary medical qualification known as the Triple Qualification diploma, in conjunction with the Royal Colleges in Edinburgh. This allowed bearers to practice medicine and register with the General Medical Council. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow even played a role in dental education until 1948, running the Glasgow Dental School and awarding the LDS RFPSG qualification. Today, the college focuses on postgraduate medical education. It offers examinations for Membership and Fellowship to qualified physicians, surgeons, dental surgeons, and podiatrists. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow also offers specialist postgraduate diplomas. These diplomas cover various subjects including dermatology, child health, and dentistry. Located on St. Vincent Street, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow has been a prominent part of the city’s medical landscape for centuries.
