Could a church be built for boys? In the heart of Glasgow, on Tharsis Street, stands the Foundry Boys’ Church. It’s a testament to a unique chapter in the city’s industrial past. The Foundry Boys’ Church isn’t just any church. It represents the spirit of the Glasgow Foundry Boys’ Religious Society, founded in 1865. This society aimed to provide social and spiritual guidance to the young boys toiling in Glasgow’s iron foundries. The society’s St Rollox branch, established in 1869, found its home in various locations. First meeting in St Rollox School, then moving to Barony Free Church (Blochairn Church) in 1873, before finally settling at the Tharsis Street building in 1894, which became known as the Foundry Boys’ Church. The original church building on Tharsis Street was actually St Rollox Church, built in 1861. It later became Garngad Christian Institute before becoming the Foundry Boys’ Church. Imagine young boys, their faces smudged with soot, finding solace and community within these walls. The Foundry Boys’ Religious Society wasn’t just about sermons and hymns. It provided a much-needed escape from the harsh realities of industrial life. They organized outings, offering glimpses of a world beyond the foundries. They even took 1,000 children on a summer outing before the First World War. The Foundry Boys’ Church stands as a symbol of resilience and community spirit. It reminds us of a time when faith and fellowship played a vital role in navigating the challenges of industrial life. It also serves as a reminder of the social inequalities of the time. While Charles Tennant, the owner of the St Rollox chemical works, amassed a fortune, his workers endured dangerous conditions and low wages. The Foundry Boys’ Church offered a haven for these young workers, a place where they could find support and hope amidst the grime and hardship. Today, the Foundry Boys’ Church continues to serve its community, though the foundry boys are long gone. It’s a living testament to Glasgow’s industrial heritage and the enduring power of community.
