Whispers of faith echo from these very stones. St Gabriel’s Catholic Church stands before you a testament to unwavering devotion. Built in 1927 it replaced earlier structures. These earlier churches served a growing community of Irish immigrants. Their faith journey shaped the very foundations of this place.

The first Mass in Hazleton Pennsylvania was held in a humble log house. This was the home of James Mooney. Soon many Irish miners attended. The need for a proper church grew rapidly. By 1855 Bishop John Neumann now a saint helped establish St Gabriel’s. The original church was a simple wooden structure. It stood at the corner of South Wyoming and Chapel Streets. Construction cost a mere $2000.

As the congregation swelled St Gabriel’s outgrew its modest beginnings. A second church was constructed in 1869. It was considered the most beautiful church in Northeastern Pennsylvania at the time. This red brick marvel was designed by Edwin Forrest Durang. He was a prominent Philadelphia architect specializing in Catholic churches.

Mine subsidence forced the demolition of the second church. The present St Gabriel’s emerged from this challenge. Designed by Peter Sheridan it is a magnificent example of 13th-century French Gothic architecture. Pink granite and Indiana limestone adorn its exterior. Its stunning stained glass windows were crafted by the renowned Franz Mayer studio in Munich. The Rose Window above the choir loft was a gift from the Michael Gallagher family. The intricate details showcase realistic figures painted in the German Baroque style.

The church’s interior boasts an elaborately pinnacled Gothic Revival marble altar. Renovations in the 2000s restored its original grandeur. Three large murals depicting scenes from Christ’s life now adorn the apse. The church was rededicated in 2003. It stands as a symbol of resilience faith and enduring beauty. St Gabriel’s is more than a building. It’s a living story etched in stone a beacon of faith for generations. It continues to serve the community. It welcomes all who seek spiritual solace and connection.
